The Ormond Beach Life Saving Corps was formed in 1949, when the concessionaires were required to provide lifeguards in order to obtain permits to operate on the beach. Three lifeguards, plus one supplied by the city, manned the beaches within the city limits. In 1952, the organization became official, and this group photograph of the 1952 corps shows, from left to right, original guards Maurice Hendricks, Ted Cassidy, Andy Romano (captain), Bobby “Honeypath” Hawthorne, William Gunn, Richard Schonamaker, and Jerry Naugle.
